Body Image Awareness Week

I was reading in the school newspaper that this past week was Body Image Awareness Week. I think it is good that the school is addressing this issue. Even though I have never had an eating disorder, I think that society sets young girls (and an increasing amount of boys) up to the attitude that you can literally never be too rich, too thin, or too beautiful. I feel that this attitude is an indicator of a flawed society. If a person doesn't fit society's criteria of what a person is supposed to look like, they are disregarded. Then there are the individuals who fear rejection and will do whatever it takes to be accepted, even if it means risking their lives to do it.

I have failed to see the logic in what is happening in our society. There are those who argue that being overweight isn't healthy and that's why people shouldn't be that way. While that may be true, that is not a justification for discrimination. I have also found that people use the health factor as a crutch so that they can discriminate.
