Yes we made it to the Elite 8. I am all for keeping to faith but I have to admit that the whole UCONN situation is making me a little nervous. Nonetheless, this is farther than I though we would ever go -- so however the results turn out I will be very happy for what we accomplished.

Anyway as for other stuff, The Simpsons should be interesting tonight. They are going to have a live opening sequence in which I think that I have already seen. Plus Ricky Gervais is going to be on it and he wrote the episode. I just found out recently that he was also a writer. I'll most likely watch it.

Check out this article in the Columbus Dispatch.

ROCK ON MASON!!

Well tonight is the big night -- less than an hour from now. Notice my green text to get into the spirit of things. I must admit that I am really excited and very proud of our team. I was not one of the brave Mason students to wait in line for tickets. I was afraid if sleeping on the hard floor and concrete didn't get me, the cold weather would. Nonetheless, this week on Mason's campus has been a completely festive environment. It has not only put us on the map, but it has brought out the school spirit in everyone. Additionally, it gives us the opportunity to take the attitude that our fine young men present on the court and apply it to other areas of our lives. We look at our players working hard, showing determination, relishing in victory, and learning from mistakes and it is a motivation to our community to do the same -- be it our coursework, jobs, and other activities.
No matter what the outcome of the game is tonight. George Mason University has a bright future ahead and it's great to be part of it.

Mason and March Madness

It is so exciting that George Mason University is taking a part in March Madness. I think it is good that the school is addressing this issue. Even though I have never had an eating disorder, I think that society sets young girls (and an increasing amount of boys) up to the attitude that you can literally never be too rich, too thin, or too beautiful. I feel that this attitude is an indicator of a flawed society. If a person doesn't fit society's criteria of what a person is supposed to look like, they are disregarded. Then there are the individuals who fear rejection and will do whatever it takes to be accepted, even if it means risking their lives to do it.

I have failed to see the logic in what is happening in our society. There are those who argue that being overweight isn't healthy and that's why people shouldn't be that way. While that may be true, that is not a justification for discrimination. I have also found that people use the health factor as a crutch so that they can discriminate.

http://www.broadsideonline.com/article.php?date=02-27-2006&section=news&article=bodyimage.txt

Crash

I saw the movie Crash for the first time in one of my classes. I think that the movie sent a strong message about how we perceive ourselves and others.

The movie was disturbing on many levels because of the way the individuals' lives intertwined and we got a blatant and shocking look at racial stereotypes that are held by all, including the oppressed.

One aspect, that disturbed me even more is the way there were some characters who lived up to those stereotypes.

Toll fee for using internet

I saw on the news that telecommunication companies are considering charging users fees for using internet services such as downloading music and video files as well as using email.

As a college student, I find this very disturbing. I think that it is ridiculous that the we may be charged for things that are free to us right now. The internet has revolutionized the way I do assignments for school as well as finding out information. The access to information has opened me up to a whole other world. I think for companies to charge users is like taking a couple of steps back in time. For one thing, after paying for the services that we already pay for, it may not be affordable to charge additional fees.

I suppose that the internet has become a necessity. But some individuals can't afford the internet with the way it is right now. I think that the digital divide will become even worse between the haves and the have-nots if additional fees are applied.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11643837/

Buck O'Neil

I know nothing about baseball. I was happy that Washington got a team even though I was kind of sour because I thought that the team should come to Virginia instead.

Nonetheless, this past week, I have been following the story of Buck O'Neil. I'm saddened to the fact that he hasn't been inducted to the Hall of Fame. Like I said, I don't know a lot about baseball so I don't know why he was not inducted.

When he spoke this past week, I was completely overwhelmed by his gracious attitude about the whole situation. He came across as noble and modest. He was confident in his accomplishments and by no means was he downplaying them. At the same time, he took the whole business of being overlooked in stride and I don't think a man can be any bigger than that. What surprised me even more was when he said that he wanted to speak at the inductee ceremony.

I found this article to be very interesting.
http://http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baseball/columnist/bodley/2006-03-02-bodley-oneil_x.htm

The loss of some Hollywood legends

Again, very old news. But I have to write five more of these and I need something to talk about.

Last week, we lost some beloved actors. First I heard about Don Knotts. I think Don Knotts was an awesome character actor. Two of my all time favorite shows were The Andy Griffith Show and Three's Company. I think that his goofball antics in both shows were completely hilarious and he brought genuine comedy to whatever he was involved in.

I liked the way one minute he could be the the overly confident ladies man and the next minute his insucurities would surface and he would bumble in any given situation.

I appreciate the comedy that he gave us. It was clean. I guess when he was on Three's Company, it was a little more suggestive than say, The Andy Griffith Show but nonetheless, it was good, slapstick comedy without the vulgar toilet humor. I think it takes a lot of creativity to make people laugh in such a way and he was successful at doing it. He will be missed.

The other two I didn't know too well but I enjoyed the few roles that I saw them in.

The only thing I knew Darren McGavin from was The Christmas Story. This has to be my all time favorite holiday movie. I love it when it comes on TBS and plays the 24 hour marathon. I just watch it over and over again. I thought Darrin McGavin was funny as Ralphie's father. What I liked about him was he was what may be considered by some, the typical father. He was gritty. He didn't take a lot of nonsense off of the boys. He went to work, worked hard, and came home. Yet he was whimsical and lovable. My favorite parts of the movie was when Ralphie said "Fudge" in front of his father, when the father had battles with the car, the heater, and the neighbor's dogs, and of course, when the father won the lamp.

I really don't know that much about Dennis Weaver. However, I have seen him in a couple of made-for-T.V.-movies. Two I remember are Stolen Women, Captured Hearts and Seduction in a Small Town. I mostly remembered in the second of the two because he played the father in-law to Melissa Gilbert's character and what I liked about his character was that he was a "stand-up" kind of man who wasn't going to take a matter sitting down. He kind of had this patriarch/cowboy aura about himself and personally I thought he played it well.

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0915840/
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0569000/
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0461455/

The second one

So I have some catching up to do. A lot of things have been happening in the world and beyond. I have six entries to get caught up.

Because I have to do six entries today, I would like to talk about some really old news. A couple of weeks ago, some individuals decided that it would be a good idea to come to the Fairfax Campus of George Mason University and pilfer video equipment from one of our more technologically advanced buildings.

The week that it happened, I was sitting in class looking at the hole in the ceiling with wires hanging down. Being the uncool and completely out of touch person that I am, I had no idea that the classroom that I resided in was involved in the incident. Furthermore, later on in the week, I discovered that the other classrooms had the same hole in the ceiling.

I am really curious as to who is going to buy this equipment from these thieves and how much they are going to sell it for.

I have to admit. A long time ago when I was maybe attending high school, I wouldn't have cared if someone stole valuable equipment from my school, even if you told me to replace the equipment was coming from my parents' tax dollars.

However, I guess as you get older your attitudes about things change. I guess that is why I felt violated by the break in. This is the first time I have attended a school that is so technologically advanced and I am paying for these luxuries with my own money. So for someone to come in and steal property, it's almost like they are stealing the students' property. So unlike when I was in high school, this seems real personal.

My Electronic Journalism professor Steve Klein summed it up best in his interview with The Broadside when he gave his opinion about the incident.

http://www.broadsideonline.com/article.php?date=02-20-2006&section=news&article=thefts.txt

Something I find kind of amusing, the school is now out of $85,000 worth of equipment. A week before the incident occurred, I was leaving the classroom with one of my instructors. He had a pen in his hand and he was desperate to get it back to the office from which he borrowed it.

He said, "This is school property. I have to get it back to the office."

I kind of knew what he meant but I kind of questioned him saying, "School property?"

He said, "Yeah. If I don't give this back, the school loses 9 cents and then you have to pay for it. That will really add up if everyone takes supplies from here."

Now I see what he means.

The first one

This is the first blog.
